Asian American Resources Center Update: The Asian American Resources Center Planning Team is excited to get the message out that the AARC is ready for the next step! This project has been a tremendous experience for our community. This planning committee will make a presentation on where they are now and where they are going next. As part of getting the message out, the planning teams from the Asian community and the City of Austin will discuss when the construction will get started. Their presentations will ignite community spirit, discuss activities to get the rest of the community involved and the time line, and provide handouts.
Census 2010 - Community Call to Action. Census 2010 is one of the most important events that will occur this decade in this community. Over $400 billion a year in federal aid is distributed based on Census data. That’s the money that gets the right teachers for our schools, that paves our highways and builds our rail lines, and provides health care and housing for the less fortunate in our community. That’s four trillion dollars over the next decade!
A study by PriceWaterhouseCoop ers estimates that during the 2000 Census, Travis County was under-counted by 15,732. The Mayor will speak on this issue, deliver his call-to-action comments, and discuss the Mayor’s committee on the complete count, census partners, and the importance of community participation.
Listening to the Asian American Issues: Everyone is encouraged to attend the town hall meeting to ask questions or make comments on community issues. This section is an open discussion, and whenever appropriate, the Mayor will respond.
Take Effective Action: Mary Lee, KXAN-TV meteorologist, will moderate the Town Hall meeting. The buffet will start at 7:00 PM with the presentation of the AARC. The meeting will proceed with the Mayor’s discussion on the 2010 Census and then address community issues. The town hall meeting will conclude at 10:00 PM. The next step is for our community to take action to support the 2010 Census complete count. We will allude to strategies detailing what our community can do to continue the momentum established at the town hall meeting, assist planning committee members to achieve success as well as identify resources available in our community.
